Venus Williams is one of the fittest female athletes in the world, so when she serves up fitness tips, it’s probably a good idea to listen.
During a recent interview with Refinery 29, the tennis superstar talked about how she stays in such amazing shape. Here’s a look at some of her best fitness tips:
Keep your eye on the prize
Venus advises those who set fitness goals to focus on the future instead of fretting about the present. “It’s going to be grueling now, but it’s going to be better and better,” she said. “So, you need to focus on how much stronger you’re going to get, and how it’s going to be easier one day.” The payoff will definitely be worth pushing through the pain.
Jam while you jog
Venus’s best advice for runners is to create a playlist to listen to. It will help you get pumped up and keep you from getting bored. “If you’re running, it’s terrible if you don’t bring music, especially if you hate running,” she said. “Bring music if you’re going to run, or else it will last forever.” Try changing your playlist every week or two so you look forward to having new tunes to listen to. Venus also recommends switching up your workout so that you don’t get tired of doing the same thing. If you don’t feel like running for 30 minutes, cut your run in half and hop on a bike for 15 minutes instead. You can also mix things up with sprints and interval workouts.
Don’t just dress to impress
Venus obviously likes to wear workout gear that makes her feel good, but you shouldn’t just focus on style when dressing for the gym. The athlete says that it’s also very important to pay attention to what your workout wear is made of. “Another thing is, especially if you’re in an air-conditioned gym, try to wear something that wicks sweat so you aren’t cold,” she said. To prevent your crotch and underboob areas from getting a bit swampy, look for clothing made from materials that will make those sweat spots evaporate away quickly. Most moisture-wicking fabrics are polyester blends with names like CoolMax, Dri-FIT, and Climalite.
Venus Williams revealed that she eat a combination of protein and carbohydrates to fuel up before matches, and she replenishes what she lost by consuming a 200-calorie snack after a match. She’s a vegan, so her favorite foods for staying fit include protein shakes with veggies and fruit, green juices, beans, lentils, and nuts. If you need a really big energy boost during the day, she recommends munching on a little cashew butter, and one of her favorite low-calorie snacks is truffle popcorn.
